Moerewa: A community celebrates a centenary

21-22 April 2023: Simpson Park in Moerewa might seem like an unremarkable piece of turf. But for the few thousand that have, over the last 100 years, run barefoot, booted up, grazed knees, cauliflowered ears, sprained ankles, broken legs, torn muscles, scored tries, lost matches created friendships and lasting memories - it's a field of dreams.

And it has been home to the Moerewa Rugby Club who've recently celebrated their centenary. The celebrations kicked off with a formal dinner with over 100 guests, including players - past and present, dignitaries and sponsors who were taken on a trip down memory lane, valiantly steered by Master of Ceremonies and local rugby legend, Kake Owen.

Rugby stalwarts, Laurie and Alexis Nankivell were recognised and honoured for their contribution to Moerewa rugby with lifetime membership awards.

The next day, even the weather couldn't dampen the celebratory mood as all three teams: Reserves, Premiers and Womens went on to win their respective games against visiting teams from Kerikeri and Onerahi.
