TRAILBLAZERS: Not only were Ngāti Hine front and centre on stage, Te Tū o Ngāti Hine permeated on-air, online and on-site with the Ngāti Hine FM team successfully delivering a world-first for Te Matatini's Haka Translate service: Six languages (English, Mandarin, Fijian, Tongan, Samoan and Cook Island), to a global audience.
Haka Translate was broadcast and streamed over the four-day festival via the Te Matatini app, its broadcast frequency 103FM and the TVNZ+ channel which had a record 1.8m online audience.
What is Haka Translate? Haka Translate provides a free, simultaneous translation service throughout live stage performances at the biennial Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival. The service has been operating since 2007 after Te Matatini festival organisers recognised a need to cater for the significant numbers of tourists and English speaking audiences attending the festival.
